BBC WORLDWIDE TAKES FLIGHT WITH TERN

BBC Worldwide has tapped UK indie Tern Television for a three-year first-look deal.

The deal extends Tern's relationship with the BBC, and follows a year that saw strong sales for its key programmes, in particular UKTV commissions Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses and How To Find A Husband.

Tern's MD David Strachan said the agreement marks the company's first exclusive deal with a distributor. "BBC Worldwide has done a really good job for us in exploiting the success of our UK series in the international market and this deal allows us both to develop a closer relationship and build on success."

BBCWW has so far sold Tern's observational doc series Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses to 14 territories, including New Zealand, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands and Thailand, and the series has also been shown across Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East on BBC Prime.

Mark Reynolds, director of factual for BBCWW's indie unit, said Tern is "making its mark" in British television.

"It is clear their profile and output are growing rapidly," said Reynolds, "their slate of programmes and commissions is impressively diverse and we look forward to building its value further through our international sales network."
